Google has some of the best engineers / developers on earth, so getting into the car game now, which has crashed in this country, might be the right move.

Google has started preliminary work on making electric vehicles charge more efficiently. Google's company's director of Climate Change and Energy Initiatives, Dan Reicher, who has been outspoken on the point of cars and clean energy, noted that google has been investigating the "software side looking at how you would write a computer code to manage this sort of charging infrastructure."

Google had a partnership with Ford and Toyota for gas-electric vehicles in '07 so the auto biz it's clearly within the sites of the company's radar (also know as google earth).
